Hate To Say It... (And some suggestions for Conde)

But I was right. Lucky magazine is a mess - Keith Kelly in the post notes:

Elsewhere in the house of Condé, there were rumblings about Lucky, the magazine that was recently given a major redesign by Editor-in-Chief Brandon Holley.

The hot rumor now is that the magazine will go all digital or at least drastically cut back from its monthly frequency to produce a quarterly and go digital with the rest of the schedule, insiders are hearing.

One source said that Holley is still very much in with the powers that be, but there is no denying that the mag is having trouble.

The most recent circulation figures before the redesign showed a flat circ picture, with 1,122,916 copies a month. It needed to send out 65,460 free copies to meet its rate-base promise to advertisers to deliver 1.1 million copies a month.

Its ad pages were down a troubling 17 percent in the first half of 2012, sinking to 404.4 ad pages.

That follows several years of diminishing ad sales, including a 2011 tally, which saw a 9 percent tumble to 1,119 ad pages.

Here;s the problem with Lucky going all digital - Conde Digital is a mess. AND it should have been a retail site for years - not losing ground to other sites. as in - “Oh! I like that! (click) I bought that!”

Also, in the fast paced digital era - a MONTHLY shopping magazine? It should be at the very least weekly, if not daily - and there’s already Daily Candy.

It hate to say it, but Conde, you missed the boat - if you want to try and catch it, you’d better hurry up … but I know how much you don’t like to hurry.

Back To The Future: Election 2012 (1980)

Seriously - the 2012 elections are a flashback to the 1980s.

  • both parties are talking about the ERA (again)
  •  Equal pay for women is STILL an issue (didn’t we settle this? OH wait - the Republicans dont want it. Again).
  • Mitt Romney’s Reagan hair
  • Republicans think abortion is a game changing issue
  • The tax cuts for the rich (Trickle down theory 2.0)
  • For some reason the NYT thinks Gloria Steinem is relevant again
  • Newt Gingrich is still talking
  • Democrats are being accused of being socialists and commies
  • Mitt Romney is Hanging out with John Sununu
  • Race attacks are still happening
  • An Iran scandal is brewing
  • we’re mired in debt
  • Rush Limbaugh is still spewing vile false crap on air for the republicans

The list can go on and on… How can we move or LEAN forward when 75% percent of the conversations are outdated?

Bill Clinton: You Got Some 'Splainin To Do

BC was behind the push to tear down Glass Steagall, even AFTER Long Term Capital Management failed and had to be bailed out. We are feeling the repercussions now. He and his cohorts also made fun of/criticized Brooksley Born, then head of the CFTC, who was the lone voice against tearing it down. (Why sometimes lone voices are the bravest/most sane).

would also love to hear then Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin’s thought’s on the matter (he accused Born of trying to take control of derivatives so they would be under her jurisdiction).

Padded Bras: A Retail Conspiracy

heres the deal - i like a tiny bit of padding - no reason for anyone to know I’m cold. BUT EVERY SINGLE BRA these days has like 2 inches of padding. I don’t want ginormous boobs. I like mine the way they are. I also like to know if I’m being felt up. Gap, Victoria’s Secret, etc: QUIT IT.

The Campaign Against Women → nytimes.com

Whether this pattern of disturbing developments constitutes a war on women is a political argument. That women’s rights and health are casualties of Republican policy is indisputable.

motherjones:

libraryyeti:

Excellent (and depressing) piece by Barbara Ehrenreich. I’ve seen a lot of what she mentions in action.

(By the way, if you haven’t read her book Nickel and Dimed, I recommend it.)

Yes, yes. Nickel and Dimed is a classic.

someone needs a state sponsored vasectomy

msnbc:

Desmond Hatchett of Knoxville, Tenn., doesn’t deny fathering 30 children, by 11 mothers no less — instead, he’s pleading with the state to help him out with child support.
